Our Owl STEAM Day is full of hands-on fun and learning all about these fascinating night creatures! We start the morning by reading a nonfiction book about owls to build background knowledge and spark curiosity. Then students rotate through engaging STEAM centers—each one designed to connect science, technology, engineering, art, and math with our owl theme.
🧪 Science: Owl Pellet Exploration

In this center, students become scientists as they explore real owl pellets! They carefully pull apart the pellets and use a recording sheet to document what they find—bones, fur, and more! Students make predictions about what the owl might have eaten based on their discoveries. It’s such a fun way to learn about food chains and animal digestion.

💻 Technology: Owl Math Boom Cards

Students will practice math skills with a fall-themed interactive Boom Card™ game. The digital deck focuses on sorting by beginning sound! These self-checking cards are perfect for independent learning and review.
🏗️ Engineering: Build an Owl Box

For this engineering challenge, students will design and build an owl box. They can use recycled materials, blocks, or craft supplies to create a safe and cozy home for an owl family. Encourage them to think about what an owl needs to survive—shelter, safety, and warmth!
🎨 Art: Owl Directed Drawing & Writing

Students will follow step-by-step directions to complete a directed drawing of an owl. Once finished, they’ll add a sentence or two about something they learned—like what owls eat or how they see at night. These make beautiful hallway displays and show off both creativity and new knowledge!
🔢 Math: Number Clip Cards

In this math center, students will use owl-themed clip cards to practice numbers to 20. They’ll count objects, recognize numerals, and clip the correct answer with clothespins. This fine-motor-friendly center combines math practice with hands-on engagement.
🍪 Bonus Activity: Owl Snack & Recipe Card

For a tasty treat, students can make their own owl snack using graham crackers, apple slices, bananas, raisins, and candy corn. After enjoying their snack, they’ll fill out a simple recipe card to record the ingredients and steps. This is a fun literacy and sequencing connection to round out the day!
