Why use Letter Matching Write the Room?
Research supports how important it is for beginning readers to practice identifying letters. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with this skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Letter Matching Write the Room is an activity that meets that criteria. This activity combines the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in letter recognition and does it in a way that is both fun and motivational. It also gets students up and moving in the classroom!
How to Use:
Hang (staple, tape, etc.) the cards around the classroom. Students can put the recording sheet on a clipboard, walk around the room, find a letter, and write the matching letter on their recording sheet.
