30 locks with base ten block pictures and 30 corresponding numbers (keys) in color OR black and white that can be matched together to practice an important and crucial beginning math skill, place value to 30. These locks can be used for many different purposes and in a variety of ways.
Why use Place Value to 30 Math Locks?
Research supports how important it is for students to be able to have multiple opportunities to practice new skills that they are learning. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with a skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Place Value Math Locks is an activity that meets that criteria. Math Locks combine the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in counting and identifying numbers and to do it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Students choose a lock, count the base ten blocks (tens and ones) in the picture and find the key with the numeral that matches. They can also choose a key, look at the number, and find the picture (lock) that has the same amount. Students can then write the number on the lock on the recording sheet (optional). For an added layer, students can put the keys and/or locks in number order.
