371 pictures or equations (locks) and 371 corresponding numbers or shapes (keys) in color OR black and white that can be matched together to practice important and crucial beginning math skills, counting numbers to 20, place value to 30, addition, subtraction, missing numbers, and 2D & 3D shapes. These locks can be used for many different purposes and in a variety of ways.
Why use Math Locks?
Research supports how important it is for students to be able to have multiple opportunities to practice new skills that they are learning. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with a skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Math Locks is an activity that meets that criteria. Math Locks combine the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in a variety of math skills and to do it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Students choose a lock, look at the picture or equation, and find the matching number, sum, difference, or shape on a key. They can then write the number, equation, or shape on the recording sheet (optional).
