Why use Math and Literacy Locks?
Research supports how important it is for students to be able to have multiple opportunities to practice new skills that they are learning. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with a skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Math and Literacy Locks is an activity that meets that criteria. Math and Literacy Locks combine the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in letter names, letter sounds, decoding words, number sense, addition and subtraction to 10, and shape recognition and to do it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Students choose a lock, identify the letter, beginning sound, CVC word, CVCe or long vowel word, blend, diagraph, r-controlled vowel, shape, equation, or quantity of objects of the picture, and find the matching letter, sound, word, number, or shape on a key. They can then write the letter, sound, word, number, or equation on a lock on the recording sheet (optional).
