48 long vowel pictures (locks) and 48 corresponding words (keys) in color OR black and white that can be matched together to practice an important and crucial beginning reading skill, decoding long vowel words. These locks can be used for many different purposes and in a variety of ways.
Why use Long Vowel Literacy Locks?
Research supports how important it is for beginning readers to practice decoding long vowel words. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with this skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Long Vowel Literacy Locks is an activity that meets that criteria. Literacy Locks combine the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in long vowel decoding and to do it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Students choose a key, decode the long vowel word, and find the matching picture on the lock. They can then write the word on a lock on the recording sheet (optional).
