Engaging and hands-on beginning sound practice! Your kindergarten, TK, or preschool ( Pre-K ) students will love matching pictures with letters that show the beginning sound. These are great for whole-class teaching, small group instruction, literacy centers, independent practice, morning work, or intervention.

What’s Included:

78 picture cards (3 cards for each letter of the alphabet) and four different recording sheets (one to write the letters in a box, one to write the letters on lines, one to trace the letters, or one to color in the letters). These can be used for many different purposes and in a variety of ways.

Why use I Spy Beginning Sounds cards?

Research supports how important it is for beginning readers to practice beginning letter sounds. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with this skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, I Spy Beginning Sounds cards is an activity that meets that criteria. I Spy Beginning Sounds combines the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in identifying and writing beginning letter sounds and does it in a way that is both fun and motivational.

How to Use:

Go over each picture name with the students. Have them repeat the name of each picture. If students do the activity independently, teach them to look at the picture on the card and then, color, trace, or write the letter that shows the beginning sound (depending on which recording sheet you choose).

This I Spy Beginning Sounds activity can be used as morning work, at the beginning of a reading group, in a literacy center, or any other way that fits with your needs. It’s also a useful tool to be used by a parent volunteer or a paraprofessional working with one or a few students.
