Engaging and hands-on CVC word phonics practice! Your kindergarten, TK, or first grade students will love hunting for CVC pictures around the classroom and using the recording sheet to write all of the words that they find! Another option is to put the cards in a sensory bin or spread them out on the table. These are great for whole-class teaching, small group instruction, literacy centers, independent practice, morning work, or intervention.
- 60 CVC picture cards (12 cards for each short vowel)
- 7 different recording sheets (one for each short vowel, one for mixed vowels, and one to write the word and use it in a sentence)
- Labels for photo box storage containers (if you choose to store them this way)
Why use CVC Write the Room?
Research supports how important it is for beginning readers to practice decoding CVC words. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with this skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, CVC Write the Room is an activity that meets that criteria. Write the Room ( or scoot ) combines the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in reading and writing CVC words, and does it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Go over each picture name with the students. Have them repeat the name of each picture. If students do the activity independently, teach them to look at the picture on the card and then, write the word on their recording sheet or use it in a sentence.
This Write the Room activity can be used as morning work, at the beginning of a reading group, in a literacy center, or any other way that fits with your needs. It’s also a useful tool to be used by a parent volunteer or a paraprofessional working with one or a few students.
