Engaging and hands-on CVC practice! Your kindergarten, TK, or first grade students will love these puzzles as they match a picture with the CVC word. These are great for whole-class teaching, small group instruction, literacy centers, independent practice, morning work, or intervention.
60 different puzzles in color OR black and white (12 puzzles for each short vowel) and 7 different recording sheets (one page for each short vowel, one page for mixed vowels, and an option to write a sentence using the CVC word). These can be used for many different purposes and in a variety of ways.
Why use CVC Puzzles?
Research supports how important it is for beginning readers to practice decoding CVC words. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with this skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, CVC Puzzles is an activity that meets that criteria. CVC Puzzles combines the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in reading and writing CVC words, and does it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Go over each picture name with the students. Have them repeat the name of each picture. If students do the activity independently, teach them to read the CVC word on a puzzle piece and find the matching picture. Students can then write the word on a recording sheet or use it in a sentence. Put the puzzle pieces in a sensory bin for even more fun!
This CVC Puzzles activity can be used as morning work, at the beginning of a reading group, in a literacy center, or any other way that fits with your needs. It’s also a useful tool to be used by a parent volunteer or a paraprofessional working with one or a few students.
