What’s Included:
58 Beginning Sound pictures (locks) and 58 corresponding letters (keys) in color OR black and white that can be matched together to practice an important and crucial beginning reading skill, recognizing beginning sounds. These locks can be used for many different purposes and in a variety of ways.
Why use Beginning Sounds Literacy Locks?
Research supports how important it is for beginning readers to practice letter sounds. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with this skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Beginning Sound Literacy Locks is an activity that meets that criteria. Literacy Locks combine the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in letter sounds and to do it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Students choose a lock, identify the beginning sound of the picture, and find the letter that represents the beginning sound of the picture on a key. Students can also choose a key and find a lock that has a picture on it with the same beginning sound that the letter or the key represents. They can then write the letter on a lock on the recording sheet (optional).
