Why use Beginning and Ending Digraphs Literacy Locks?
Research supports how important it is for beginning readers to practice matching sounds to print. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Beginning and Ending Digraph Literacy Locks are activities that meets that criteria. Literacy Locks combine the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in reading and to do it in a way that is both fun and motivational.
How to Use:
Students choose a key, “read” the blend and find a picture on a lock that has the same beginning or ending digraph or vice versa (choose a lock, look at the picture on the lock, and find a key with the same beginning or ending digraph). Then, color the digraph in or circle it on the recording sheet (optional). For an added layer, students can sort the keys and/or locks by digraph. Go over any of the picture “names” on the locks that your students may have difficulty identifying before beginning the activity.
