Engaging and hands-on practice adding numbers to 10! Your students will love matching up the addition pictures or equations and sums (locks and keys) and using the recording sheet to write down all of the sums or equations they unlock! These are great for whole-class teaching, small group instruction, math centers, independent practice, morning work, or intervention.

What’s Included:

72 locks (36 addition pictures and 36 addition equations) and 72 corresponding numbers (keys) in color OR black and white that can be matched together to practice an important and crucial beginning math skill, addition to 10. These locks can be used for many different purposes and in a variety of ways.

Why use Addition to 10 Math Locks?

Research supports how important it is for students to be able to have multiple opportunities to practice new skills that they are learning. Intentional, frequent, and focused opportunities to practice over an extended time (deliberate practice) facilitates automaticity with a skill. Since research also shows that learners are more motivated to do an activity that is fun and novel, Addition Math Locks is an activity that meets that criteria. Math Locks combine the motivation of a hands-on, engaging activity and deliberate practice with the goal of helping students gain automaticity in adding to 10 and to do it in a way that is both fun and motivational.

How to Use:

Students choose a lock, count the objects together in the picture or solve the addition equation, and find the key with the numeral that shows the sum. They can also choose a key, look at the number, and find the lock that shows that addition equation. Students can then write the sum on a lock on the recording sheet or write the addition equation (optional). For an added layer, students can put the keys and/or locks in number order.
