October is the perfect time to bring a little spook-tacular fun into the classroom while still keeping learning hands-on and meaningful! Our Bat-Themed STEAM Day is filled with engaging activities that cover science, technology, engineering, art, and math—all tied together with literacy starting point.
We begin our day with an interactive read aloud of the nonfiction book Bats. With ready-to-use lesson plans for comprehension and vocabulary, students dive into fascinating bat facts and practice using nonfiction text features. After the read aloud, it’s time to explore bats across the STEAM centers!
🧪 Science: Echolocation in Action

Students become little scientists as they explore how bats “see” with sound. We set up a sound wave experiment to help them understand how vibrations travel. Then, we play a fun echolocation game where one student is the “bat” and uses claps or sounds to find the “moth.” This hands-on learning helps students understand echolocation in a memorable way!
💻 Technology: Number Sense Boom Cards

At the technology center, students practice counting and number sense with a self-checking Boom Card game. These digital activities keep students engaged while giving them immediate feedback as they match numbers and quantities in a bat-themed setting.
🏗️ Engineering: Build a Bat Cave

Future engineers get creative with materials such as blocks, cups, or cardboard tubes to design and build their own bat caves. The challenge is to create a cave that is strong enough to hold several bat cutouts (or bat toys). This center encourages problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking.
🎨 Art: Two Bat Projects

Art is always a favorite, and for this day, students have two choices:
- Bat Directed Drawing – Step-by-step drawing directions help students create their own unique bat.
- Bat Craft with Writing – Students make a bat craft and add bat facts on the belly to display what they’ve learned. This turns into an adorable hallway or bulletin board display!
🔢 Math: Number Clip Cards

In math, students practice number sense with clip cards. They use clothespins to clip the picture that shows the target number in different ways—tallies, dots, ten frames, and more. This hands-on center builds strong number recognition and representation skills. Students could also use bat erasers or other fun counters to cover up the representations of the target number instead of using clothespins.
