Apple Day is one of our favorite fall activities in kindergarten! It’s the perfect way to integrate hands-on learning with a seasonal theme that kids love. Plus, it’s so easy to tie apples into all areas of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).
Here’s a peek at the Apple Day STEAM centers our students rotate through—plus a FREE apple-themed literacy activity you can grab at the end of this post!
📖 Interactive Read Aloud

We kick off our Apple STEAM centers by reading the nonfiction book An Apple’s Life by Nancy Dickmann. This interactive read aloud includes lesson plans for comprehension, vocabulary, and more!
🍎 Science: Apple Oobleck

What happens when you mix cornstarch and water or apple juice? Add a little cinnamon or apple pie spice and you’ve got apple oobleck! Students explore states of matter as they test whether oobleck is a solid, a liquid, or maybe even both. This messy but magical experiment is always a class favorite.
💻 Technology: Apple Boom Cards

For the technology station, we set up apple-themed Boom™️ Cards. These interactive digital task cards give students a chance to practice literacy and math skills while staying on theme. They’re self-checking, so students can get immediate feedback and work independently giving you time to run a center or monitor the room.
🏗️ Engineering: Apple Towers

Give students apple chunks and toothpicks and challenge them to engineer the tallest apple tower they can build. Not only is this activity exciting, but it also builds problem-solving, fine motor, and teamwork skills. Plus, it smells delicious while they work! The students can complete the included Engineering Design template, so they can learn the engineering design process as they have fun.
🎨 Art: Torn Paper Apple and Apple Life Cycle Hat

For creative fine motor art activities, students make a torn paper apple craft. Provide red, green, brown, and yellow construction paper, and let kids rip, tear, and glue the pieces to form their own apple masterpiece. This simple art center strengthens hand muscles needed for writing while giving students a chance to express themselves. Students can also create a hat by cutting out pictures showing the life cycle of an apple and gluing them in the correct sequence to their hat. It’s a fun way for students to share their learning with their families!
🔢 Math: Shapes with Apple Play dough and Counting Apple Seeds

At the math center, students practice number sense by counting apple seeds. We love using black beans as our “apple seeds”, but you could also use black pompoms or paper seed cutouts. We also (or ask families to) cook up some apple-scented play dough (recipe included) for our students to use with our apple shape cards. They love forming the dough into different 2D shapes. We then save the dough and use it during math and literacy centers over the next few weeks!
🍏 FREE Apple Letter Matching Activity 🍎

To make Apple Day even sweeter, we’ve created a FREE Apple Letter Matching activity that you can download. It’s perfect for small groups, literacy centers, or extra practice at home. Students match uppercase and lowercase apple letters while reinforcing letter recognition. It also includes a variety of apple-themed recording sheets for students to practice letter formation.
